Family Counseling
Approach/Philosophy
Family Counseling can be one of the most challenging forms of therapy due simply to the number of people that are involved. It is for this reason that progress may be slower due to the entrenched behavioral patterns as well as a lack of motivation to do therapy on the part of one or more members in the family. When starting family counseling it is important that those that are participating work with myself to be able to communicate clearly what their goals are in coming to family counseling and that those goals are measurable. My initial approach is simple in that I frequently will act as a mediator about the issues that are presenting, and I will collect information from the parties involved either individually or in a family group meeting. I will then seek to have the family establish measurable goals to be able to chart progress. While many times families come in with specific disagreements, there is typically an underlying problem that is more long standing that will need to be addressed if there are to be substantive future changes. Immediate changes in behavior and approach to the problem will make these underlying issues more accessable and open for necessary changes.
Referrals to Family Resources
There are many family and individual help resources in the community, and it is part of my approach as a therapist to help my patients be connected to the services they need. These services my include substance abuse or sexual addiction treatment, human services, parental education, supervised visits or other coummunity, agency, or individually based programs and services.
